EA Intends To “Double Down” On Star Wars Video Game Development
In a company webinar with investors this week, EA CEO Andrew Wilson spoke about third-party giant’s “tremendous relationship” with both Disney and Lucas and how it wanted to “double down” on Star Wars games after experiencing a huge amount of success with titles such as Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Jedi Fallen Order.
We’ve had success in first-person shooters, in RPGs, in action adventure, in MMORPGs, in mobile, and I believe we’re going to have success with Squadrons as well. We’re going to double down on that partnership. Disney continues to be very very committed to the IP and to the canon.
We’ve got the combination of great IP, great development expertise and experience and success from us across genres, across platforms, across business models. And we’ve got new generations [of fans] coming to the IP all the time. So our expectation is we think there continues to be a really really strong opportunity in an around that relationship and that IP going forward.
Wilson backed this up with some figures – citing both Battlefront games as top performers. Combined, they’ve sold around 35 million copies to date. The mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes continues to perform and Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order has shifted roughly 10 million copies since its release last November.
In other words, it sounds like the Star Wars video game license will be staying put with EA. Unless the company has some appropriately themed surprises for Switch owners, for now, we’ll just have to rely on TT Games for our next Star Wars fix, when Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is released later this year.
