PlayStation 5 is a “masterpiece”, says Fortnite developer
The PlayStation 5 has been announced, and though people may not be in love with the final design of the hardware, the people that make games are certainly in love with what’s on the inside of the massive white box.
Fans may have fallen in love with the special, PlayStation-focused secret that’s hidden in plain sight on the console and its accessories, but Nick Penwarden, Epic Games’ vice president of engineering, has even more praise to heap on the machine.
In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, the staffer at the company behind Fortnite and the Unreal Engine gushed over the next-gen PlayStation’s capabilities as he explained just how “revolutionary” Sony’s latest hardware will be for gamers and game developers.
“The PlayStation 5 is a masterpiece of systems design,” Penwarden told the magazine.
“Not only is it driving a huge leap in computing and graphics performance, but it is also revolutionary in terms of storage and data compression technology, unlocking new kinds of games and experiences for players to enjoy.”
Penwarden isn’t alone in his praise, either.
Fellow employee Kim Libreri, chief technical officer at Epic, added:
“Next-gen graphics and processing power will not only make games more immersive, but will also enable entirely new gameplay concepts that can take advantage of fully dynamic environments and lighting, much improved physics, smarter AI, and richer multiplayer experiences.”
What does that mean in simple terms? Games on the next generation are going to be bigger, better and prettier than anything you’ve seen before.
PlayStation and Sony have already gone on the record to explain how the PS5 will all but eliminate loading times in upcoming games, and Epic itself has praised just how quickly the console can read data.
As a player, that means you’re going to have a more seamless experience in your games, you’re going to see more richly detailed graphics appear on screen quicker than ever before, and you’re going to be able to explore worlds that dwarf what we’ve seen so far.
It’s an exciting time to be a gamer, that’s for sure – we just hope Sony manages to keep the price as low as possible so people don’t have a nasty shock when it’s finally revealed.
