Kurt Cobain’s cardigan sells at auction for a record-breaking £260,000
Kurt Cobain’s famous cardigan, the one he wore during Nirvana’s iconic MTV Unplugged performance in 1993 has become the most expensive cardigan ever sold at auction.
The olive green cardigan sold for $334,000 (£260,000) at Julien’s Auctions, exceeding its estimated $200,000 – $300,000 to break the previous record. The cardigan has reportedly never been washed, including cigarette burns, and was last sold in 2015 for $140,800.
The man who bought the item at the last auction had previously remained anonymous before conducting a new interview where he shared the pressure he felt from simply owning the piece.
He revealed to Rolling Stone that the piece of rock and roll history “I opened it up and it immediately hits me: ‘Oh, now I’m also going to be responsible for this’,” he told the outlet. “It was kind of like when my children were born years ago; I was so happy to see them, but then I was like, ‘Oh no…’ ”
When asked if he had worn the jumper he said, “It’s kind of a weird, powerful thing when you do something like that, when we put on somebody else’s [clothes]. It’s like when they say you should walk in somebody else’s shoes. When I put that on, I was like, ‘Ah, no. God, I don’t want to wear this.’”
