Kofi Annan was born in Ghana (in 1938 it was the British colony of the Gold Coast). He served as Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1997-2006. In 2012, for six months he was the special envoy of the UN and the Arab League in Syria.
In 2001, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
