Germany’s Economy Minister doubts effectiveness of new sanctions against Russia
The Economy Minister of Germany Peter Altmeier does not believe that new sanctions against Russia will be effective. He stated it on Monday evening, September 7, on the air of ARD, Deutsche Welle reports.
“Sanctions are more likely to strengthen politics in the country,” the minister said.
According to Altmaier, he cannot recall “a single case” when sanctions would force a country like Russia to “change its behavior.”
However, he suggests that Germany may take such measures against Moscow in connection with the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Russia’s violation of fundamental human rights cannot be tolerated,” Altmeier said.
As we reported earlier, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk demands a three-month embargo on oil and gas supplies from Russia in response to the poisoning of Alexei Navalny.
“The time has come to finally hit the masters in the Kremlin with a tough reaction,” the official said.
The Ukrainian diplomat also demanded an end to all European investments in the Russian economy.
