Arsenal boost as Mikel Arteta told Portugal wonderkid available for bargain price

Arsenal are rumoured to be considering making Portuguese teen sensation Matchoi Djalo their third signing of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners seemingly aren’t afraid to splash the cash this window, with Brighton central defender Ben White on the cusp of a move to the Emirates for a fee of around £50m, but Djalo falls on the cheaper end of the spectrum and would only cost £1m.

At 18 years of age, the winger would be seen as a talent for the future, unlikely to play first-team football anytime soon even if he were to join the Gunners this summer.

Despite his youth, Djalo first featured in the Portuguese top flight nearly two years ago after making history when he came on as a substitute for Pacos de Ferreira against Benfica in August 2019

This made him the youngest player to ever make an appearance in the Primeira Liga in the process.

However, the teenager has failed to progress as many around him would have hoped, having made just a further five first-team features since his debut, three off the bench, though he has continued to impress for Portugal’s Under 19 side.

A tricky right-footed winger, Djalo possesses a level of versatility and ability to adapt beyond his years, just as comfortable when reverting into a central midfielder.

This is not the first time the teenager has been touted with a move to the Premier League, with Everton, Newcastle and Southampton all monitoring the prospect’s situation when he was just 16.

Italian giants Juventus had also reportedly registered an interest in Djalo, but a deal failed to progress beyond speculation.

Arsenal are thought to be intentionally building a youthful squad for the future, as recent additions Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares would suggest.

Both just 21 years of age, Tavares, much like Djalo, made his name in the Portuguese top flight with Benfica before his move to North London.

The Gunners have also entrusted academy graduates with a lot of responsibility in recent years, with 19-year-old Bukayo Saka one of the first names on the team sheet while Emile Smith Rowe is Arsenal’s new number 10 following the signing of his new deal.
