Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta urged to seek Kieran Tierney advice over £40m transfer target

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been urged to speak to Kieran Tierney about transfer target Odsonne Edouard, his former Celtic team-mate. The Frenchman is reportedly on Arteta’s radar with the futures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette at the Emirates uncertain.

Aubameyang will enter the final 12 months of his contract in July whereas Lacazette will have just two years left on his existing agreement.

But Celtic frontman Edouard has apparently been identified as one who can come in to replace either of the pair, with the 22-year-old in sensational form this term.

Edouard is thriving north of the border and has 27 goals and 19 assists in 45 appearances for the Hoops this term as they chase a fourth consecutive domestic treble.

Signing Edouard would require Arsenal to smash the Scottish transfer record for a second straight summer, having paid £25million to land left-back Kieran Tierney last term.

Were they to return to Parkhead to sign another of Celtic’s top talents, the north Londoners may have to part with as much as £40m.

But former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas insists that if his old club’s interest is real, then they have to chat with Tierney to get his take on a potential move.

“If Arsenal are genuinely interested in Edouard, it would be a crazy scenario if Mikel Arteta and his staff were not questioning Tierney about the player’s qualities,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“When Tierney’s fit, he’s very much an attacking full-back. He could see Edouard’s movement, and he could drill balls into his feet.

“He got quite a lot of assists for Edouard during his time at Celtic, knows the quality of the player and he’s improved this season.

“Would he be brought in based on the link-up working before? No, that would not be the case because we have yet to really see Tierney for any significant period of time due to injuries.

“But they would certainly be asking him about his character and what gets him motivated.

“The crux of the matter is whether he would be fair value at £40m for Arsenal. The only way for me he would is if Lacazette or Aubameyang were to leave.”

Despite that, Nicholas thinks Edouard would be a better fit for a team like Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton.

He added: “I just do not think Arsenal can afford to let Aubameyang’s contract run out, so they will have to renew it.

“Despite that, I do not see the Edouard to Arsenal link materialising, but I could certainly see him moving to the Premier League.

“He could be more suitable to Everton if they build their team in the right way. I have watched them quite a bit this season.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin has had a purple patch but Edouard is a better technical player.

“He’s got more about him than Calvert-Lewin and there’s no doubt in my mind he would be a very good buy for someone.”
