Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s reason for losing patience with Mesut Ozil finally explained
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s decided to snub Mesut Ozil this season because of the Germany international’s inability to play on the wing, according to reports. The 32-year-old was left out of the club’s Premier League and Europa League squads at the start of the campaign. And the Gunners have come to rue that decision, with the north London giants struggling so far this term.
Arsenal saw Ozil score just once in the Premier League last season from 23 appearances under both Unai Emery and Arteta.
That was a poor return from a player on wages of £350,000-a-week and, back in the summer, the decision was made to leave him out in the cold.
Many Arsenal fans have taken issue with that call and want the 2014 World Cup winner reinstated to the side, regardless of his drop-off in form in recent years.
There’s no chance of that happening at the current moment in time, however, with a move away from the Emirates Stadium instead looking far likelier.
And Goal say Arteta finally lost patience with the 32-year-old because of his inability to play on the flanks.
The Spaniard wants a system where he uses wide playmakers and that’s never been Ozil’s specialty, with the 32-year-old instead better-suited to playing centrally.
Ozil did occasionally play on the wing during his spell at Real Madrid in Spain but Arteta reportedly wanted Philippe Coutinho to be his replacement.
Coutinho was initially expected to leave Barcelona at the start of last summer’s transfer window.
But that didn’t happen, with Ronald Koeman instead choosing to make the Brazil international a vital part of his plans.
Arsenal are currently scrambling to find a buyer for Ozil and his agent, Erkut Sogut, has claimed talks with Fenerbahce have taken place ahead of a potential exit.
“Mesut has another six-month contract with Arsenal. Certainly, he missed football,” he told Fanatik.
“He is currently working hard to wear the Arsenal shirt again, and he will continue to work.
“I would like to clearly state our situation regarding Fenerbahçe. Yes, we had meetings with Fenerbahçe. We had a one-on-one conversation with the club’s most authorised people.
“However, we can never have a contact before January for official transfer talks. We received transfer offers for Mesut from all over the world.
“Fenerbahce’s interest is also known. Nothing has changed for Mesut right now. Under these circumstances, it seems that Mesut will complete the season in Arsenal.”
Former Manchester City and West Ham star Trevor Sinclair thinks Arteta has been wrong to snub Ozil this term.
“Everyone talks about how he’s a great coach, but that’s not what makes a manager,” he said.
“It’s your man management skills. You look at Guendouzi scoring over the weekend, and you look at Ozil, he is not contributing to that side.
“So for me, if you’re looking at man management, which is management, he’s not doing that well.
“He might be a great coach, but he’s not managing the players well and he’s not getting the best out of individuals in that squad.”
