Arsenal could sign perfect Lautaro Martinez alternative after Lionel Messi seals PSG move
Arsenal could have the chance to sign an alternative option to Lautaro Martinez if Lionel Messi joins Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Mikel Arteta reportedly wants to add a new striker to his squad before the end of the month, but Martinez may not be attainable.
In July, The Athletic reported that Arsenal were looking to move for Martinez after being long-standing suitors.
However, with Romelu Lukaku on the verge of a £97.5m return to Chelsea, the 24-year-old looks set to stay put at the San Siro this season.
Unbelievably, Lukaku’s second Chelsea arrival isn’t the biggest transfer involving a forward this summer.
Six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi is expected to be confirmed as a Paris Saint-Germain player this week.
Reports claim Mbappe has told PSG he wants a new challenge and, therefore, won’t extend his contract at the club.
But Messi’s arrival offers the prospect of an all-star front three involving the Argentine icon, Mbappe and Neymar.
The chance to play alongside Messi could tempt the 22-year-old to stick around for at least one more year.
If he does, he would likely thrive in between two world-class South American talents, but one player from that region would be left in the cold.
Regular football has been scarce for Icardi since leaving Inter for PSG in 2019.
The 28-year-old only made 11 Ligue 1 starts last season, with Neymar, Mbappe and Angel di Maria being Mauricio Pochettinho’s preferred front three.
He reminded the club of his ability as he scored in their 2021/22 league opener at Troyes at the weekend.
But once Pochettino has all his options back available, he’ll likely return to the background.
Arsenal could offer him the chance to be the focal star of Arteta’s attack this season at the Emirates Stadium, where the club would guarantee regular minutes.
Whether the Gunners could tempt Icardi to join is yet to be seen, but he could be a great option with Arteta eyeing a new forward.
He has netted 34 goals in 47 PSG starts after scoring 121 times across six seasons at Inter.
Icardi undoubtedly has what it takes to thrive in the Premier League and could be available once Messi arrives at the Parc des Princes.
