Arteta deals transfer blow to Roma over Xhaka
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta rules out Granit Xhaka’s move to Roma: ‘He is going to stay with us.’
Xhaka has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Giallorossi and is pushing for an escape route from the Emirates Stadium.
Several reports in Italy suggest the Switzerland captain is pushing to join Roma, but the Gunners’ coach Arteta reveals the 28-year-old will go nowhere this summer.
Arsenal offered him a new contract until June 2025 with an increased salary, confident to complete the agreement soon after turning down Roma bid [€12m+€3m add ons].

“Granit is going to stay with us. He is a key member of our squad,” the Spaniard said after Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat against Chelsea in a friendly match on Sunday.
In July, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Xhaka was ready to give up on his Arsenal bonuses for the 2020-21 campaign to speed up negotiations and facilitate a move to Roma.
José Mourinho is a long-time admirer of the former Borussia Monchengladbach star, but Roma and Arsenal have not agreed the player’s transfer fee and the Gunners are now reportedly preparing a new contract for the 28-year-old.
