Aston Villa handed Jack Grealish boost despite negotiations ‘ongoing’ over Man City transfer
Aston Villa have been given hope that Jack Grealish could sign a new contract rather than move to Manchester City in this summer’s transfer window.
The Premier League champions are desperate to make Grealish their first signing of the window as Pep Guardiola looks to cement their status at the top of the division.
Grealish has starred for Villa since breaking into the team in 2014, going on to be named club captain and becoming a key player under Dean Smith.
Since helping Villa to promotion through the Championship play-offs two years ago, Grealish has scored 14 goals and notched 15 assists.
Those goals and assists helped Smith’s men to escape relegation in their first season back in the Premier League before just missing out on a top-half place last year.
That earned him a call-up to the England squad for this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament, with the attacker impressing in his cameo appearances.
City boss Guardiola has certainly been left convinced that Grealish has what it takes to perform for a club fighting at the top of the league.
The Spaniard has made the Villa star one of his top targets for the summer window, with City submitting a £100million bid for him last week.
Since news broke of that offer, talk around the move has slowed, with Villa making their own play to keep him in Birmingham.
The Midlands club have offered their captain a new contract, with a bumper pay increase on his current deal which expires in the summer of 2025.
And they have been handed a boost to their hopes of keeping him at Villa Park from transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
According to Romano, City are still in talks with Villa over the move, with “negotiations ongoing” between all the involved parties.
He also states that this week will be crucial to reaching an agreement with Grealish ready to “consider” Villa’s proposed new contract.
