Aston Villa linked with shock move for Man United star
Aston Villa have again been linked with a shock move for Manchester United forgotten man Jesse Lingard ahead of the January transfer window.
According to website TEAMtalk , the England international is being monitored by more than six Premier League sides while European teams are also said to be interested. Villa have been name-checked in the report.
Leicester City, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur have all been linked with a move for the former Birmingham City loanee.
Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers have also been credited with an interest in Lingard, who is out of contract with United in the summer.
United, though, do hold an option to extend Lingard’s contract with the club which they could trigger in order to protect his value and to stop him from leaving Old Trafford for free.
It is being reported that Lingard will request that United allow him to leave in the New Year if they do not exercise that option.
Lingard was also linked with Villa last month as a potential makeweight in a deal to bring Jack Grealish to United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side interested in Dean Smith ‘s captain.
Such a deal would not make any sense for Villa because Grealish is their talisman with six goials and the same number of assists already this season.
Lingard, who turns 28 next week, is well down the pecking order at United and has only played 99 minutes of football this campaign.
He’s not made a Premier League matchday squad for seven games, while he only made nine starts last season and famoulsy failed to score or assist at all in 2019.
However, his best form came in 2017-18 when he scored 13 times and registered seven asissts and if he can return to that type of player he will be a bargain pick-up for any team.
