Barça News Barcelona captain closes in on salary cut agreement; midfielder’s contract situation ‘complicated’
Following Gerard Pique’s wage-cut agreement right before the start of the La Liga season in order to help Barcelona register their new signings, the other club captains, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto also agreed to reduce their salaries.
Negotiations have been going on to arrive at an agreement over the reduced terms. Jordi Alba saw his altered contract finalised earlier this week, agreeing to a 25% pay cut along with a wage deferral until 2024.
And, it now seems like Sergio Busquets could be closing in on finalising a deal, according to COPE’s Victor Navarro. It is expected that the veteran midfielder will also agree on terms similar to that of Alba, as claimed by Mundo Deportivo.
However, Navarro adds that things could be a bit ‘complicated’ when it comes to Sergi Roberto.
The 29-year-old, unlike the other three Barcelona captains, sees his existing contract expire in ten months. And, the club are willing to hand him a new two-year deal, with a wage deduction of close to 50%.
But those terms might not be acceptable for the versatile midfielder, with his agent expected to present a counter-offer to the Catalan giants imminently. While negotiations continue, there are unlikely to be any problems at the end and both parties hope to complete the formalities before the 31st of August.
With the club going through some dark times with regard to the finances, the gestures from all four club captains has been a classy move. Not only has it helped Barca register their new signings, but it also takes some burden off their bloated wage bill.
Once the agreements with all captains are done and dusted, Barcelona could look to enter into negotiations with some of the highest-earners at the club like Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho over pay cuts
