Barcelona and AC Milan target Man Utd star Jesse Lingard for January agreement
Barcelona and AC Milan are both reportedly lining up moves for Jesse Lingard, who looks set to leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Lingard revived his career during a loan spell at West Ham over the second half of last season, but has struggled to convince Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since returning.
He has made just three appearances in the Premier League so far this term, with all of them coming off the bench.
It is not how Lingard would have imagined his return to Old Trafford playing out, having scored nine goals during his short stay at the Hammers.
His limited opportunities since returning to United has led to him rejecting their first offer of a new contract.
His current deal expires at the end of this season, with the England international free to speak to foreign clubs from January.
Having seen their first offer turned down, United are understood to be yet to make an improved proposal to the 28-year-old.
That stand-off has now altered clubs in Europe’s leading leagues, with ESPN reporting both Barcelona and AC Milan are eying a move.
It is stated that the midfielder is “open” to moving to either La Liga or Serie A, with Barca and Milan just two of a number of potential destinations.
His status as an experience England international has made him one of the top free transfers for next summer.
Lingard is keen to secure his place on the plane for the 2022 World Cup, a situation he does not think will be possible if he stays at United.
As a result, the prospect of regular game-time is said to be set to “play a major role” in Lingard’s decision about his next career move.
Both Barca and Milan can begin conducting negotiations with Lingard and his representatives from the start of next year, with the United star able to sign a pre-contract agreement from January.
