Barcelona midfielder ‘contemplates all scenarios’ as contract talks halt

Sergi Roberto finds himself in a tricky situation with regard to his future at Barcelona.

One of the longest-serving members in the current squad, the 29-year-old, has entered the final year of his contract. Talks over a new deal had been initiated between the club and his agent, Josep Maria Orobitg.

However, the negotiations have come to a halt for quite some time now, and the Catalans have shown little inclination to restart discussions, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The report claims that Barcelona continue to insist that they intend to hand Roberto a new contract. But talks have stopped since early October, and the club have not made any gestures to indicate that they are trying to tie the Spaniard down to a new deal.

Roberto, for his part, believes that any decision on his contract is likely to be made once the new manager is appointed. His former teammate, Xavi Hernandez, is set to return as the new head coach and could decide on whether the versatile midfielder is handed a new deal or not.

Before talks stopped, Barcelona and Roberto were discussing a two-year deal with salary reductions, like the other three club captains have accepted. The Spanish international is willing to reduce his salary for the current season by the same percentage as his fellow captains. However, for the next couple of seasons, he wants the reduction to be equal to the average percentage of the entire squad.

So, as the wait continues for talks to resume, Roberto is not taking anything for granted and is contemplating all possible scenarios. “We are waiting for Barça, who already know our approach and the player’s will to adapt to the club’s economic circumstances,” his agent told Mundo Deportivo.

It remains to be seen if there are any efforts made from Barcelona to reopen negotiations with Roberto or whether the Blaugrana decide to lose him on a free transfer next year.
