Bayern Munich manager’s classy message to Timo Werner after losing out to Chelsea
Hansi Flick has sent a classy message to Timo Werner after the forward snubbed Bayern Munich to sign for Chelsea.
The Bayern boss had identified Werner as a potential target for his side this summer, but lost out to The Blues, who are set to land the striker on a five-year deal.
Werner’s future had been up in the air for months, with Liverpool believed to be leading the race for his signature, until Chelsea swooped in.
Bayern have made a habit of poaching the best talent from other sides in Germany, but Werner is one that has got away.
“This is a decision Timo made. And you have to respect that, everything is okay,” Flick told reporters on Friday. “Timo is a very good player, also a player who scores.
“Chelsea made a very good commitment if that’s the case.”
The prolific Red Bull Leipzig marksman was available to any club willing to match his £53million release clause.
Frank Lampard met with Werner back in February to discuss a potential switch to Stamford Bridge, but the 24-year-old’s preference was to join up with compatriot Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
However The Reds were not prepared to activate Werner’s release clause, which expires on June 15, leaving Chelsea in pole position to sign him.
It is not known whether Bayern had also prepared a bid for Werner, but the German champions reportedly have their sights set on other targets, namely Man City’s Leroy Sane and Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz.
With finances tight as a result of the coronavirus, it was Chelsea’s drive to prioritise Werner and get the deal done which ultimately sealed the move.
Bayern may have lost out to Chelsea anyway, given Werner’s concerns over playing time, as he would likely have played second fiddle to Robert Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena.
Chelsea have been able to tempt him with assurances he will be their lead striker next season, something Bayern nor Liverpool were able to offer.
