Carlo Ancelotti admits he is surprised by new Everton signing
Carlo Ancelotti has delivered his verdict on Niels Nkounkou’s display following Everton’s 5-2 win over Fleetwood Town on Wednesday evening.
The left-back was one of his side’s top performers as the Blues cruised into the fourth round of the League Cup and booked themselves a home tie against West Ham in the next stage.
A brace from Richarlison before strikes from Alex Iwobi, Bernard and Moise Kean were enough to seal the victory for Ancelotti’s side.
The final goal of the evening was set up by a deft backheel from Nkounkou who had caused the hosts all sorts of problems with his ability to break forward and create chances for the visitors.
And his manager described just how impressed he was with the summer signing, who was initially brought into the club to be involved with the under-23s, after the game.
Ancelotti told his post-match press conference: “He had a good performance, he continued the performance he had against Salford.
“He’s showing good quality in front, he has to improve defensively, but in front he has a lot of quality.
“He played with a lot of confidence, he has courage, he has character.
“I’m really pleased for him and also surprised.”
Alex Iwobi earned his first start of the season in the win over Fleetwood and capped a fine display with a goal in the second half to make the game 3-1 at the time.
And the Nigeria international was another player Ancelotti was impressed by.
“It was really good, he scored a goal and this was important also,” the boss added.
“But he had a good performance, good combination in front with Jonjoe on the right side of the pitch. I am satisfied.
“He’s come back from an injury but he seems fit and in a good condition.”
