Carlo Ancelotti needs new Everton plan to solve injury problem
With Chelsea, they’ve got pace and midfielders with runners. I think they’re the two things we’re afraid of.
We do play deep so I think there probably will be a five-at-the-back.
Chelsea’s new signings have come in and hit form now, so we’ll probably be a bit more cautious and not leave space in behind. Michael Keane and Yerry Mina aren’t the quickest.
Hopefully then our midfield can protect the back line and give us the opportunity to get up the pitch.
A back four, generally, should suit us more – but I understand why we switched to a three.
Ben Godfrey came here and obviously didn’t want to sit on the bench, he’s forced his way into the starting line-up and he needs game time to try and build his partnerships up.
The four seems more suited to us and I think with Fabian Delph starting on Saturday I did feel sorry for him picking up another muscle injury.
But you’ve got to have a second plan for when that happens, but we were left scratching our heads at the absence of Niels Nkounkou again. Why isn’t he part of the squad?
It was surprising that he wasn’t there, but he might get a few chances between now and Christmas to show what he’s capable of.
It’s really frustrating that these niggling injuries are starting to creep in, but I’ve said for a while these will happen from now until the end of the season.
We’ve got to manage that now, not drop our head and feel sorry for ourselves. Everyone is in the same situation and Carlo needs to find a way to work with the players and show them what they’re capable of.
Burnley were setting traps and we fell into them. Pickford’s throw out looked like setting up a great counter-attack, but then two seconds later it’s a chance for them.
We’re not all on the same page right now. The majority of the time we’re letting teams dictate and bringing unnecessary pressure on ourselves, making the game more difficult for us.
It’s going to be a huge game against Chelsea, a big test for the boys.
But these are the types of game you love, coming up against world class players. You want to win your own battle and prove a point.
Don’t be too respectful. Respect what they’re all about but put them under pressure, make them make a mistake and don’t sit back, which we have done over the past few weeks.
Hopefully then we might be able to pick up an important result.
