Chelsea close to sealing transfer of former Barcelona defender Xavier Mbuyamba
Highly rated defender Xavier Mbuyamba is set to join Chelsea after leaving Barcelona, according to reports.
The 18-year-old centre-back is hot property in the transfer window having being hailed as the next Virgil van Dijk.
Mbuyamba trained with Chelsea last year, but penned a deal with Barcelona last summer, joining from Dutch side MVV Maastricht.
The Daily Mail claim Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Mbuyamba, but the youngster will have to work his way into Frank Lampard’s first-team squad.
Lampard has given youth the chance to shine at Stamford Bridge this season, with Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Billy Gilmour, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori all becoming regulars having stepped up from the academy.
But that is expected to change now that Chelsea’s transfer ban has been lifted and already the Blues have signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.
Chelsea have high hopes for Mbuyamba and will be delighted to see off interest from Real Madrid, Inter and Juventus, who were all tracking the centre-back.
The signing will be the latest deal for Chelsea in what is turning out to be a busy summer for the London club.
Chelsea are expected to sign a left-back, a goalkeeper and another forward before the transfer window shuts in October and there is also the potential for a big exodus.
Lampard has green lit the sale of nine first-team players including N’Golo Kante, as the Chelsea boss aims to raise funds so he can continue the spending spree.
