Edinson Cavani breaks silence after dad says he wants to quit Man Utd

Edinson Cavani has broken his silence on his Man United future following comments from his father, who claimed the Uruguayan striker wants to return to South America.

Cavani joined the Red Devils on a free transfer last summer and has chipped in with seven goals in 27 appearances at Old Trafford.

He has been a solid acquisition for boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has the option to extend Cavani’s one-year-deal by a further 12 months when his contract runs out in June.

Neither party has yet to confirm an extension, which has led to intense speculation over the 34-year-old striker’s future.

Cavani’s dad, Luis, stoked the fire early this week by suggesting his son could leave this year and play for Boca Juniors in Argentina.

He told TyC Sports: “My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again. Edinson is going to end up playing in South America.

“I want Edinson to play in a team that fights for something important. Edinson had many conversations with (Juan) Riquelme (Boca Juniors second vice-president) and he would like to play for Boca.

“He was always seduced by the idea of playing in Boca. If he returns to South America he is leaning towards Boca.

“By the middle of the year he will return to South America. My son’s idea is not to continue there, he wants to return.”

But Cavani junior appeared to cast doubt on his father’s claims in his latest Twitter post.

United boss Solskjaer recently said of Cavani: “I can only say Edinson has done well. I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.

“It’s a good discussion to have. We always speak to the players and with his contract situation at the moment we’re very pleased with what he’s done.”
