Everton will be kicking themselves as Kaka-like talent Reinier heads to Real Madrid
Real Madrid have secured the signature of Brazilian talent Reinier Jesus on a six-year deal from Flamengo. As reported by the BBC, the Spanish giants have spent a fee in the region of £26 million on the 18-year-old, who made his first-team breakthrough with the Copa Libertadores champions last year.
But for Everton, this must be seen as a massively wasted opportunity.
It had seemed as though the Merseyside club had beaten everyone to the punch when it came to Reinier.
Back in July, it seemed as though Everton were all set to make a move for the teen sensation.
It was suggested by Esporte Interativo and numerous other sources that Everton had secured a deal to sign the talented teenager in January. The report claimed Everton would pay £36.7 million to bring the player in after he turned 18 in January.
That was later refuted by Globo Esporte, who stated the Toffees were playing a waiting game, in the hope that Flamengo’s valuation of the player goes down as Reinier’s contract was then due to expire in December 2020.
But Everton are now missing out on a real gem, who was compared to Kaka by his Flamengo boss Jorge Jesus in conversation with the Brazilian publication Lance last year.
Everton director of football Marcel Brands is known to pluck gems from the South American market but on this occasion, that has not been the case.
Whether it was work permit issues, doubts over the fee or Everton’s own financial intricacies, a move for Reinier has not happened and Everton could now be missing out on a future star for club and country.
Hopefully, Everton can be more successful in their next pursuit of similarly talented players.
