Gareth Bale back to Tottenham? Real Madrid star’s agent dismisses talk of Christian Eriksen swap deal
Gareth Bale’s agent has rubbished reports linking him with a return to Tottenham in exchange for Christian Eriksen and says the forward wants to spend the rest of his career at Real Madrid.
Zinedine Zidane’s return as Real coach has increased speculation about Bale’s future after the Welshman admitted to a difficult relationship with the French legend during his first spell in charge.
Eriksen, meanwhile, is said to be among Zidane’s top summer targets, and Spurs are increasingly resigned to losing the Dane at the end of the season as he continues to stall on a agreeing a new contract.
But Jonathan Barnett said many of the stories about Bale in Spain and England were “made up”.
“Recently a journalist wrote about Gareth Bale going to Tottenham for Eriksen – that Real Madrid were going to offer Bale plus £50million for Eriksen, which is complete rubbish because even today Gareth is worth a lot more,” Barnett told the BBC’s Football Daily podcast. “They make up stories, and it annoys me.
Asked if Bale would stay at Real, Barnett replied: “Yes, why not? He wants to play all his career for Real Madrid and if it does not work out, we will talk again.
“He will talk with Mr Zidane, take it from there and then see at the end of the season.”
Bale was pivotal as Real won a host of major titles under Zidane before his sudden departure last summer, including three Champions League titles and one La Liga crown.
But Barnett admitted: “Gareth wanted to play one way and Zidane wanted to play another. That was the cause of [the tension] and over a period of time it got worse.
“If you let Gareth play the way he wants to play, having a run of games in a row not in and out, he can be right up there with Cristiano Ronaldo. He still has a great talent.
“Gareth is very strong. He is a very strong-willed person and does not care what the press say.”
