Gary Neville’s Manchester United and Liverpool Premier League prediction comes back to haunt him
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has been left with egg on his face after a pre-season prediction came back to haunt the former defender.
Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions on Thursday evening after Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
That brought an end to a 30-year wait for a league title and the delay on celebrations was extended due to the coronavirus crisis in recent months,
It was a moment to savour, marking the latest triumph following on from last season’s Champions League win – and it’s made even more sweeter by some Neville quotes.
Speaking prior to the start of the season, the outspoken Sky Sports pundit gave his assessment of Manchester United, who have endured a decline in recent seasons following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, he was not concerned by those issues and was confident United would return to the top – even suggesting they would lift the title again before Liverpool ended their long wait for glory.
“What I’m saying is, Liverpool, City, Tottenham, all these clubs have had poor recruitment policies over the last 25 or 30 years at times. So United are going through one at the moment.
“Eventually they will stumble upon the right recruitment system, the right recruitment people, they’ll get a great manager – hopefully, that’s Ole – and they’ll start to win again. That’s going to happen.
“I can guarantee you as clear as day, Manchester United will win again. They’ll probably win the league before Liverpool, in my opinion. And that’s not being disrespectful, they’ll probably win the league before Liverpool.”
To be fair, he wasn’t far off as Manchester United are only 37 points clear of their historic rivals…
