Jack Grealish makes ‘best mates’ claim about Manchester United and Manchester City foes
Jack Grealish has promised to step up and take a penalty if England are involved in a Euro 2020 shoot-out.
The Aston Villa captain appeared on Crouchy’s Year Late Euros Live screened on the BBC just after Italy opened the tournament with a resounding 3-0 victory over Turkey.
In an interview with former Claret and Blue striker Peter Crouch, Grealish looked relaxed and confident, opening the dressing room door to the Three Lions squad and discussing his own development.
He is hopeful of playing against Croatia in England’s opening game on Sunday – and confident that if Gareth Southgate’s men progress out of the group stages they will be able to rely on the 25-year-old in the most pressurised of circumstances.
Asked if he would volunteer to take a spot-kick Grealish was unequivocal.
“I would take one deffo, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t. Most of my best games as a professional footballer have been big games, high pressure games.
“I love my football and this season I feel like it has been my best. I feel like I have matured properly as a player because you know when you are young, especially me, I always wanted to look good.
“But in reality that doesn’t matter, what you need is goals and assists and that’s what I tried to work on so much this year.”
Crouch went on to talk about the cliques within the England camp when he was in it but Grealish insisted in the current group club rivalries are laid aside. “I couldn’t agree more, even like Raheem [Sterling] and Marcus [Rashford], two rivals on a Saturday, as soon as they go to England they are best mates and want to succeed together and I think that’s the best mentality.”
And he also spoke of his admiration for former Liverpool man Philippe Coutinho. “One of my favourites to watch is Coutinho because he always has that one where he drops left and goes – that little shimmy which I like doing myself.“All those YouTube videos have always got crap music on so I always put a song like I on in this [ear] and then my other phone I put a video on – Coldplay Viva La Vida.”
