Jose Mourinho sent warning over January transfer plans by former Tottenham star
Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson has sent a transfer warning to Tottenham.
Spurs have been linked with a move for Stuttgart winger Nicolas Gonzalez in recent days, with reports claiming they have already held preliminary talks, along with Borussia Dortmund.
But with a wealth of options out wide, including Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura and Gareth Bale, Jose Mourinho has the dilemma of whether to add fresh talent given he might not be able to offer regular game time.
And according to former goalkeeper Robinson, Mourinho should think again, claiming it would take someone rather special to top the talent currently in the Spurs squad.
“It’s always difficult when we’re talking about speculation, but I don’t think they need anyone,” he told Football Insider. “They are in a position now where they’ve got a really strong squad.
“They’re gonna have to spend a really big fee to improve what they’ve got.
“The way that they play, they rarely use an out-and-out winger. They play with the number nine at the top and then three in behind. And those three in behind rotate and change positions.
“So for that to be a priority or to be pushed through, I’d be surprised.”
Despite the wealth of talent available to Mourinho, Tottenham have struggled of late, picking up just one league win in six games, and that’s why the Portuguese boss might be tempted into the market during this window.
Beyond Gonzalez, Spurs have also been linked with a move for Christian Eriksen this month, with the former midfielder made available by Inter Milan following a difficult first year in Italy for the Dane.
