Jose Mourinho told Tottenham stars to target two Man Utd players during 6-1 thrashing

Tottenham targeted Manchester United ’s full-backs at Old Trafford due to their lack of support from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

Jose Mourinho identified the Red Devils’ wide defenders as the players to go after, and it worked a treat on Sunday.

Spurs thrashed United 6-1 in their Premier League showdown, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men taking an early lead from the penalty spot.

Luke Shaw in particular had a difficult afternoon and he could even have seen red for hacking down Lucas Moura.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was also left in trouble as United failed to cope with Tottenham’s potent attack.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min caused them problems all game, while Spurs’ full-backs enjoyed their time in Manchester too.

Serge Aurier found the net after the break as he was put through in plenty of space by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Sergio Reguilon was also impressive as the summer signing from Real Madrid quickly settled into life in the Premier League.

The Manchester Evening News say both he and Aurier were specifically tasked with pressing high on their counterparts.

Tottenham believed that Greenwood and Rashford would not defend and as a result, Spurs’ full-backs took full advantage going forward.

Additionally, Spurs guessed United’s starting XI correctly, including the inclusion of Eric Bailly ahead of Victor Lindelof, which helped their preparations.

Despite their hectic schedule of late and constant games, Tottenham looked sharper than United and their high press approach upset the hosts’ midfielders.

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic struggled, with the latter being substituted at half time with the score at 4-1.

Spurs also identified Pogba’s deep-lying role as a weak link that left Matic exposed, showing how Mourinho’s knowledge of the United team was a real benefit for the north Londoners.
