Jurgen Klopp reveals surprise reaction to Aston Villa defeat ahead of Man City clash
It was a night that will live long in the memories of Villa fans, but one that Liverpool supporters, players and staff would most likely want to forget.
Villa ’s 7-2 victory over the reigning Premier League champions last month made headlines across the world and ensured that Dean Smith’s men took maximum points from their opening three league games.
But, perhaps surprisingly, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said that he and his players were ‘quite relaxed’ after the defeat.
A hat trick from Ollie Watkins, a brace from Jack Grealish, and goals from John Mcginn and Ross Barkley gave Villa the three points, with two goals from Mohamed Salah proving to be insignificant for Liverpool.
After the game, questions were raised over the Reds’ defensive solidity, a question that has been raised again since the long-term injury to influential defender Virgil Van Dijk.
But Klopp has addressed the questions, revealing the reaction from the club to the Villa defeat.
“Defending isn’t usually our problem because we do it as a unit,” he said (via the Daily Mail ).
“We didn’t say after Aston Villa “Come on, we start again completely about how to defend.”
“We knew what we didn’t do right that night and maybe in one or two other games as well and we tried to sort that without overdoing it.
“But when you concede seven goals, it is not that you have to start at nil (the beginning) again.
“We were quite relaxed about it, as relaxed as you can be in how we dealt with it. At the moment we lost, nobody was relaxed, we were all really frustrated about it but then how we responded, it was clear that it’s not all bad.
“We realised what was good before but some things needed to be adjusted.”
Liverpool are unbeaten since the defeat against Villa, picking up seven Premier League points and winning all three of their Champions League group games.
They face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
