Juventus show Man Utd how they could land Barcelona star Dembele on a free transfer
Juventus have reportedly told Barcelona to release winger Ousmane Dembele a year before his contract ends, in a display of how Manchester United could also attempt to prise the Frenchman away from the La Liga giants.
United have a winger high on their transfer agenda this summer and Dembele is a target alongside England forward Jadon Sancho.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a wide man to complete a devastating four-pronged attack alongside Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and either Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial or Mason Greenwood.
Solskjaer has often used Mason Greenwood on the right of his attack but the teenager is more comfortable through the middle.
Wales international Daniel James has also been deployed in the role but has struggled for consistency during his two years at the club since arriving from Swansea City.
Dembele would be a natural fit for either side due to being ambidextrous.
Barca have been trying to tie down the 24-year-old to fresh terms as he is about to enter the final 12 months of his current deal.
However, the Spanish side have so far failed to agree a new contract with Dembele’s representatives and may now choose to sell him this summer so that they do not lose him for free next year.
Ronald Koeman’s side endured a tough season. Their third-placed finish was their lowest in La Liga since 2008.
Serie A side Juventus have apparently offered Dembele a five-year deal worth £38.5million but on the condition that Barca let him leave for free, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.
It could show United how they could sign Dembele if the Red Devils’ alternative targets fail to materialise.
Solskjaer has warned his bosses that he will need at least two or three signings to bridge the gap with rivals Manchester City.
The Norwegian helped his side finish runners-up in the Premier League but they trailed City by 12 points.
A defender, a central midfielder and a forward are believed to be high on their agenda.
United’s main priority for their wide position remains Borussia Dortmund star Sancho.
The Bundesliga side knocked back a reported £70m bid last week but the Old Trafford outfit will likely try again for the former Manchester City man.
Sancho has said that he does not listen to speculation and that he is focused on helping England at Euro 2020.
“I don’t really look at it,” Sancho told talkSPORT ahead of England’s tournament opener against Croatia, which they won 1-0 thanks to Raheem Sterling’s goal.
“When I’m during the season I always focus on myself and the team because that’s the most important thing that we can do.
“When I’m on the pitch, I’m always giving my all and trying to create what I do on the pitch, that’s goals and assists.
“I try to work hard.”
