Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa explains Aston Villa’s Premier League development
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has outlined the reasons for Aston Villa’s improvement in the Premier League compared to last season.
Villa spent the 2019/20 campaign fighting against relegation back to the Championship, staying up by one point on the final day of the season. But the current season has been a different story, with Villa looking to finish in a European place at the end of the campaign.
Dean Smith ’s men currently sit in eighth position in the table, just four points adrift of reigning Champions Liverpool in sixth place, although Villa do have two games in hand over Jurgen Klopp’s side and most of their other rivals towards the top of the table.
Leeds have also had a successful season back in the Premier League, and could overtake Villa in the table with a win this afternoon. Ahead of the match, Bielsa explained the difference in the Villa team between this time last season and now.
“You construct a team to go from one half of the table to the other half, from 20 to 10 and from 10 to four. Or from 10th to 15th, from 10th to five,” he said via Leeds Live . “Aston Villa have deserved the changes they needed to make.
“They found solutions to the positions they thought they needed to improve.
“They managed to conserve the players that showed they had the level to play in this competition. They have some young players who complement the project and make it efficient.”
He added: “Aston Villa’s a team that play very well. They are consistent. In that game (in October), we were a very good version of ourselves. In the 20 games since, they’ve had ups and downs and so have we.”
