Liverpool backed to complete ‘no-brainer’ Philippe Coutinho transfer from Barcelona

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has urged his former club to re-sign Philippe Coutinho if the “money’s right”. Coutinho put together some terrific performances for the Reds during his five-year stint at Anfield until his departure to Barcelona in 2018.

The attacking midfielder, though, has struggled at Barca and also hasn’t managed to stand out at Bayern Munich, where he currently plays on loan from the Spanish champions.

Bayern are not keen on buying the Brazil international, who also appears to be surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp where he moved on a club record £142million two years ago.

Therefore, the 28-year-old is looking for his next destination and reports suggest Liverpool are considering a potential bid to bring him back to Merseyside.

Nicol would love to have Coutinho back at Anfield as he is confident his career would be revived once he reunited with the same team that made him a star.

The former defender added that should the Brazilian become available for a cut-price deal then it would be a “no-brainer” for Jurgen Klopp to re-sign him.

Nicol told ESPN: “Absolutely. Why wouldn’t you? I can’t think of one reason why you wouldn’t.

“The only place he’s excelled at is Liverpool. The place loves him, he loves the place.

“Can you imagine adding Coutinho to a squad that, right now are still champions of Europe even though they’re out of this year’s competition, and are going to win the Premier League?

“You’re going to add a player with the ability of Coutinho, who is going to come in and be in the same situation as a Timo Werner for example, where he is there to fight to get in the starting XI.

“If it’s cut-price, yeah. Listen, this guy’s making over £13m clear a year. He’s going to have to take a hit.

“The price to buy him is going to have to take a hit but if the money’s right, [it’s an] absolute no-brainer.

“If the money’s right, this would be absolutely fantastic for Liverpool.”

Coutinho joined Liverpool in 2013 from Inter Milan following an £8.5m deal with the Serie A giants.

The versatile midfielder went on to win over the crowd with his marvellous skills and recorded a total of 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances for the club across all competitions
