Man City loanee Yan Couto hoping for January recall if Joao Cancelo leaves
Manchester City defender Yan Couto is still holding out hopes of playing for the club this season.
Couto, 18, joined the club this summer from Coritiba, and was one of three players to join sister club Girona on loan for the season along with Pablo Moreno and Aro Muric. The Brazilian has made five appearances for the La Liga 2 side.
The right-back has spoken previously about choosing City ahead of interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona, saying Pep Guardiola promised he would be given a chance in pre-season to stake his claim for a spot in the first team squad.
However, due to the global pandemic, Couto’s arrival in Manchester was delayed and City’s pre-season reduced to just two weeks and plans for the youngster were quickly changed.
That has not stopped Couto from aiming for a potential recall from Girona in January, although he would need one of City’s existing non-homegrown players to leave in order to be included in the Premier League squad list. In an interview with ESPN Brasil, Couto suggested that possible depature could be versatile full-back Joao Cancelo.
He said: “I have a Portuguese passport and I do not enter the foreigners’ quota.
“If João Cancelo is sold, I have the chance to return to Manchester in January. But it’s something that you cannot know and it’s not up to me. But if they need me, I can come back easily.”
Expanding on how his loan to Girona came about, Couto said he is looking to make the most of the opportunity after missing out on the chance to join City’s pre-season.
He explained: “I went to Manchester to sign the contract and I had a conversation there at the club. [Guardiola] welcomed me, and as I had already chosen City, he knew about the other clubs, he was very happy.
“He said that I’m a great promise and that I have to work hard, that I will be with him soon, and that was a great choice.
“Because of Covid I was unable to make the pre-season with City and those international trips that there are. And then they decided to loan me to Girona.
“The pandemic brought had a lot of problems. We will see. I’m at Girona, doing a good season here to see how it goes next year.”
