Man Utd, Liverpool dealt huge blow as €25m target signs new contract
Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Steven Bergwijn after the winger signed a new long-term contract at PSV.
Bergwijn had emerged as a target for Man Utd, Liverpool and Tottenham – who reportedly went as far as to scout him on international duty. Bayern Munich, Sevilla and Ajax were also showing interest after an incredible season in which he scored 15 goals and added 13 assists in all competitions.
The 21-year-old was rumoured to have a €25m release clause in his old contract, with his agent fuelling talk of a move by admitting that it was “not a secret” that there was plenty of interest in the Dutchman.
However, that deal has now been extended by a year, to tie his future down to the Eredivisie side until 2023.
“This is the right decision,” he told PSV’s official website. “I had other options, but in the end everything has to fit well for me, but also for PSV.
“The result is that I’m staying here, with a lot of joy and confidence. That means I’m feeling well here and I’m not done learning.
