Manchester City’s new signing who turned down Real Madrid
Manchester City’s newest South American prospect Dario Sarmiento agreed to join the club in April of 2021 and will join the club in the coming summer.
Sarmiento joins the long list of illustrious South American stars to play for Manchester City. This includes the recently departed Sergio Aguero, Fernandhinino, Pablo Zabaleta and Gabriel Jesus.
Sarmiento has represented Argentina in the under-16, under-17, and under-20 levels, while also playing 22 games for Argentinian club, Estudiantes.
The Argentinian who joins the Cityzens for a reported fee of 5 million Pounds is the second-youngest player ever to play for his boyhood club, Estudiantes. When asked about interests from other major clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, Sarmiento told Marca, “The truth is that I don’t know [of any other clubs interested], but as soon as they told me the real possibility of Manchester City, I did not hesitate, it made me very happy and I didn’t want to hear anything else.”
As someone who has grown up idolizing Kun Aguero, it was not a very tough decision for the 18-year old to make. He was quoted telling Marca, “Agüero is a club idol, top scorer and the most winning player in the club’s history. I would have liked to share moments with him so that he transmits all his experience to me.”
The current president of Estudiantes and former Manchester United midfielder, Juan Sebastian Veron has also been very vocal in his appreciation for the left-footed winger.
There could not have been a better manager in the world to groom the youngster than Pepe Guardiola and he has done the right thing choosing the Etihad as his future destination. While it is hard to predict how much game time Sarmiento will get next season, his stay at Manchester City will be one to watch and hopefully he can add to the great list of successful South American superstars at the Etihad.
