Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo ‘can prove he’s the GOAT over Lionel Messi this season’

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘will be crowned the best player ever’ this season, moving ahead of Lionel Messi, according to Robbie Savage.

The Portuguese international made a dramatic return to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day as he performed an apparent U-turn and signed for United ahead of rivals City as he arrived from Juventus for £25million.

Lionel Messi also found a new club this summer, as the Argentinian left his beloved Barcelona as their financial difficulties meant they couldn’t re-sign their record-goalscorer as he joined Paris Saint Germain.

And now, pundit Robbie Savage has waded into the long-standing debate over which player is better, claiming that if Ronaldo’s stats in the Premier League this season outdo Messi’s in France’s Ligue 1, the debate will finally be settled, The Express reports.

The former Premier League midfielder told William Hill: “I think this is the pivotal season where Ronaldo, for me, will be crowned the best player ever.

“Messi started PSG, you know, he’s had a couple of injuries and is not got off to the best starts.

“I would say, because Ronaldo has done it in Spain, he started off in Portugal, come to the Premier League, Italy, and now doing it again at 36 in the Premier League.

“I would say the two greatest players ever if this season dictates, Ronaldo in the Premier League getting 20 goals, and Messi struggling in Ligue 1, I would say Ronaldo is the greatest ever.”

Ronaldo has already got off to a flying start at United, picking up from where he left off in 2009 as he currently sits on five goals since re-signing for the club in all competitions.

Messi only has the one goal, although it was a screamer against Manchester City in the Champions League, and has even admitted that he is finding it tough to adapt to a new league.

The Argentinian spoke about the step up on class of Ligue 1, and said to France Football: “It’s a league that is much more physical than La Liga.

“Here, the teams seem to me to be more powerful and the matches are very competitive, with not much space.

“Most of the players are very strong.”
