Marina Granovskaia given exciting incentive to complete £36m transfer for Chelsea

Wesley Fofana, Leicester City’s centre-back, has been linked with a move to Chelsea. The French international has had a solid start to his career with the Foxes since his arrival from Saint Etienne.

But, a broken leg and ankle in the last game of pre-season has meant a long wait for recovery and has thwarted the 20-year-old’s progress at a very young age.

Carefree Chelsea’s presenter and writer Anita Abayomi (AA) spoke with Leicester City correspondent Jordan Balckwell (JB) on Friday afternoon’s Behind Enemy Lines show about how important Fofana has been to Leicester and the type of player Chelsea could be buying.

AA: “So, Fofana has been injured since August. I want to know how his absence from the side has impacted Leicester? We’ve heard that he was the rock in your defence and now Leicester is leaking goals.”

JB: “ It has been significant. It seems strange to pin the hopes on a 20-year-old centre-back who hasn’t played that much senior football. When Leicester signed him from St Ettiene he’d only played three-quarters of the season.

“He hasn’t got that much experience but he is extremely good. Rodgers was very specific with every pre-season game in that he played the same back-four. I think it was because they knew that Jonny Evans wasn’t going to be fit for the start of the season.

“Rodgers wanted the back to understand each other because they hadn’t played together. Fofana was partnering Soyuncu. Final pre-season game Fofana breaks his leg, it’s a terrible tackle from a Villarreal forward.

“That did upset Leicester’s rhythm a little bit, they’ve had a makeshift defense this season so far. They haven’t had a clean sheet in the Premier League since the opening game of the season.

“So, we’ve missed him. He’s got all the attributes you want in a defender. The strength, height and speed. For someone so young, his reading of the game is terrific.

“His ability on the ball, both passing and dribbling out with it is very good. I don’t think it’s saying too much that he will go on to be one of the best centre-backs in the world. Claude Puel has said he’s going to be the best one day.

“Rodgers has said it as well. Yes, he is good and when you’re a centre-back at 20 you’re not reaching your peak. Jonny Evans is what, 33 and still one of the best centre-backs in the league.

“If Chelsea are interested in Fofana they could have one of the best centre-backs for 15 years. As you’ve said there’s obviously interest. I would say Fofana is ambitious and listing his dream club.

“Chelsea was one of five that he named I think. Unlike Tielemans I don’t think it’s a decision that Leicester will have to make right away. Fofana is on a long contract, until 2025.

“So, Leicester are secure in that way. I think teams will also be watching to see how he comes back from this injury. As a club, you don’t want to be sending a massive amount of money and then it turns out this bad injury.

“Broken leg, broken ankle, damaged ankle ligaments all three and know that he can’t recover from this and reach back to his height. But, in a couple of month’s time at the beginning of January, I think he’ll be back in the starting line-up.”
