Mikel Arteta ‘asks’ Arsenal chiefs to make transfer move for La Liga sensation
Mikel Arteta is hoping to continue Arsenal’s upturn in form by splashing the cash on one of La Liga’s brightest young talents.
Since a 5-0 hammering to Manchester City and former boss Pep Guardiola, Arteta has steadied the ship and the Gunners now find themselves on an 11 match unbeaten run.
There were calls for the Spaniard to walk at the beginning of the season.
Arsenal lost all three of their opening Premier League matches, making this campaign their worst start in the top-flight for 67 years.
But after proving his credentials, Arteta is ready to bolster his squad and is eyeing Yeremy Pino from Europa League winners Villarreal.
The report states Arteta has ‘asked’ the board to sign Pino due to him fulfilling the new transfer policy at the Emirates.
The Gunners are keen on acquiring young talent and embedding them slowly into the first team, with the aim of challenging for the league title once they have all reached their prime.
With the likely departures of Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah and possibly Nicolas Pepe next summer, Arteta is readying new recruits now and Pino is at the top of the list.
However, there is a potential stumbling block – Villarreal are close to agreeing a new long-term contract for their prized asset.
Still contracted to the Yellow Submarine still 2024, Unai Emery is keen for his star man to accept an improved deal due to the relatively low release clause in his current contract.
Football Espana reports the deal offered to Pino will see his buyout clause increase from €35m (£30m) to €50m (£43m) and won’t expire until 2027.
But Arsenal will be ready to pounce if the new contract is rejected.
