Mikel Arteta says Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey feels pressure
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told The London Evening Standard that Thomas Partey is feeling pressure due to the transfer fee Atletico Madrid were paid for him.
Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico on summer transfer deadline day for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £45 million.
Much was expected of the Ghana international defensive midfielder when he arrived at the Emirates Stadium, and although the 27-year-old has played well when he has been on the pitch, there have been injury problems.
According to WhoScored, the 27-year-old has made nine starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League, and once in the Europa League and the FA Cup each for the Gunners far this season.
Arteta has said that Partey is feeling the pressure due to the transfer fee.
The Spaniard told The London Evening Standard: “He knows how much he cost and that adds a bit of pressure.
“When you are not able to play you want to hurry up and do everything quicker, and show everybody how good you are and have a big impact on the team.
“That creates some anxiety for sure. Then the physical aspect, when you look at the outputs he needs to put in when he was playing in Spain or now, are pretty different.”
Much is made about Nicolas Pepe and how much he cost Arsenal. According to BBC Sport, the Gunners paid Lille £72 million to sign the winger in the summer of 2019.
Pepe has been often criticised for not doing enough and not showing that he is worth the transfer fee that the Gunners paid it.
It is encouraging that Partey knows that he has to perform due to how much he cost Arsenal. The problem with the Ghana international this season has been injuries, not his game.
