Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane: Which Liverpool ace is more likely be sold for Kylian Mbappe?
Liverpool have been touted as one of Kylian Mbappe’s preferred destinations should he look to leave Paris Saint-Germain next summer, but that would almost certainly spell the end for one of Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane at Anfield. Mbappe currently has a contract at PSG which runs until 2022 and the French champions are desperate to tie him down to a new deal.
But there are increasing reports suggesting that Mbappe is looking to leave Paris next summer.
Real Madrid have long been linked as the favourites for his signature, but a move to the Premier League has been mooted as a possibility.
Mbappe has flirted with interest from Liverpool in the past and has also praised Jurgen Klopp’s impact on Merseyside.
Any deal to sign Mbappe next summer though would take a monumental fee, likely close to the £165million PSG paid to sign him in 2017.
Both Liverpool and Real have been affected by the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic with neither club spending big money this past summer.
Zinedine Zidane in fact brought in no players with the club recouping just under £100m in player sales.
It’s been suggested that Real are preparing themselves to make a club-record bid to sign Mbappe next summer but Liverpool could put themselves in contention as well.
The only problem – quite a big one – is that selling Salah or Mane would need to happen first.
It’s almost impossible to pick between Liverpool’s most potent attackers with both being in the prime of their careers at 28 years of age.
Salah arrived a year later than Mane, but the former has proven to be a revelation from his very first season.
Dubbed ‘The Egyptian King’ by Kopites, Salah went on to break the Premier League scoring record for a 38-game season in his debut campaign and his scoring feats hasn’t stopped there.
That’s not to diminish Mane’s impact in front of goal either though as he too boasts an impressive record in front of goal.
But Salah’s prolific goal threat could well be what leads Liverpool into deciding to keep Mane.
Out of the two, Salah has been linked more with a big-money move away from Anfield with Real one of the clubs interested in signing him.
Liverpool fans may find it hard to pick a favourite out of the two, but Mane has received high praise from former professionals for his performances this season and he’s a firm favourite under Klopp.
The Reds could well use Real’s interest in Salah to help beat the La Liga side to the signing of Mbappe.
Either way it would present some risks given the success Liverpool have enjoyed with both Salah and Mane flanking Roberto Firmino.
But Liverpool’s success has arguably been built on some big-money signings such as Alisson and Virgil van Dijk and they don’t come any bigger than Mbappe.
