Newcastle make West Brom transfer decision on striker Dwight Gayle
Newly promoted West Brom will be rebuffed in their bid to sign Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle.
The 30-year-old had a hugely successful loan stint at the Hawthorns in 2018-19 scoring 23 goals in 39 games.
But Gayle is set to spearhead the Toon attack in the months ahead with Steve Bruce convinced he can be the answer to the Magpies’ goalscoring problems.
After an injury-ravaged campaign, Gayle scored four goals after lockdown, moving ahead of misfiring record signing Joelinton in the pecking order.
And following the collapse of takeover talks, Bruce has been told he’ll have a restricted transfer budget to strengthen his squad which is likely to rule out a move for Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson.
Gayle is more than happy to see out the final 12 months of his contract at St James’ Park, convinced that given the chance he has rarely had in the past, he can score on a regular basis in the Premier League.
And while Bruce would love to splash the cash ahead of the new season, he remains a big fan of the former Crystal Palace forward, regularly championing his cause last season.
Meanwhile, former loanee Valentino Lazaro has taken a swipe at the Toon chief after signing for Borussia Monchengladbach ahead of Newcastle.
The Austrian international joined on loan from Inter Milan in the New Year but despite some good moments, struggled to establish himself.
“The first few games at Newcastle went well but then came the break for corona,” he said.
“A lot of things changed and the club then decided not to play me anymore.
“It was really disappointing not to get any more minutes.”
