Pep Guardiola and Man City urged to learn from Liverpool mistakes or face similar decline
Pep Guardiola must freshen up his Manchester City squad this summer or risk suffering a drastic drop-off next season.
That’s the view of former England striker Bobby Zamora, who used Liverpool’s struggles as a warning of what happens when club’s rest on their laurels.
The Reds cruised to the Premier League title last season but their defence of their crown has been a calamitous failure.
Jurgen Klopp’s men sit a whole 25 points behind City, who are poised to bring the title back to the Etihad.
The league-leaders are clearly a cut above their domestic opposition but Zamora has warned that can all change next season if they fail to recruit wisely this summer.
“I’d still like to see one massive name in central midfield for Manchester City – if they’re short in any position it’s there,” Zamora told Ladbrokes .
“But they don’t really play with central midfielders these days – they’ve always got full-backs slotting in there throughout games and running the show.
“It’s a funny one because if they go and win the Champions League and the Premier League you might argue that they clearly don’t need to spend big on a striker.
“But it’s all about progression, evolution and developing your squad constantly.”
Zamora highlighted how Liverpool’s failure to sign a new centre-back left them light in defence in the build-up to their defensive injury crisis this season.
He added: “I think what’s happened at Liverpool is a good example of what happens if you don’t improve and strengthen while you’re on a high.
“They’ve brought a couple of names in but Virgil van Dijk got injured and you can’t say they’ve really strengthened – particularly in that area of the field – since winning the Champions League and the Premier League.
“So maybe that’s a lesson in itself that other big clubs should learn from. Even when you’re on top, there’s another level you should be striving to reach to push the current squad.”
