Pep Guardiola voices opinion on Liverpool’s potential move for Thiago Alcantara
Pep Guardiola is in no doubt that “exceptional” Thiago Alcantara would thrive in the Premier League if he completed a move to Liverpool.
The Spanish midfielder was brought through the ranks at Barcelona by Guardiola, who then insisted that Bayern Munich sign the creative talent when he joined them as boss back in 2013.
Seven years on, and having won the Bundesliga in each one of his campaigns in Bavaria, Thiago could be joining Guardiola in the Premier League if rumours of his potential switch to Liverpool are to be believed.
The new Premier League champions are said to be hot on the trail of the 29-year-old, and Guardiola clearly thinks they would be making an excellent signing.
“No doubt about this,” Guardiola told reporters when asked if Thiago could play in the English top-flight.
“A player who plays in Barcelona and Bayern Munich can play in the Premier League. Yeah of course he can play.
“He’s an exceptional player. But I don’t know what he’s going to do.”
Thiago has one year left on his contract in Bavaria, and Bayern boss Hansi Flick is hopeful he will stay with the club.
“The thing is, I always have hope. I’m actually always very positive about things,” said Flick after the DFB-Pokal Final win over Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month.
“I also know, of course, that when you’re at a certain age and you’ve already played in the Spanish league with Barcelona and in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, you feel the need to experience another big league.
“That is quite normal and that is also human. I’m trying my best to make sure Thiago stays here and that you can convince him to stay.
“But that’s one thing that time will show. We still have the Champions League ahead of us now and we have a lot of plans, also together with him.”
