Philippe Coutinho consoles crying Neymar after Champions League final with classy message
Philippe Coutinho had a classy message for Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar after Sunday night’s Champions League final, with the PSG forward crestfallen at the final whistle. Bayern Munich defeated PSG 1-0 in Lisbon thanks to a Kingsley Coman header.
Neymar had to be persuaded to collect his runners-up medal after a disappointing night in Lisbon for the forward.
The PSG star was heavily marked whenever he had the ball and failed to make a difference in the final.
He showed flashes of brilliance, and created chances when running at the Bayern defence, but was ultimately unable to create a goal for the Parisiens.
Neymar ended up being booked late in the game after lashing out with a late tackle on Thomas Muller, a sign of the forward’s frustration at getting closed out of the game.
Afterwards, he was seen in tears on the bench, and had to be persuaded into going to collect his runners-up medal.
Numerous Bayern players went up to Neymar to console him, and his international team-mate Coutinho had a few words of advice for him after the final whistle.
The on-loan playmaker said: “I have told Neymar that he has had a great season and that he is a great player.
“He will fight many more times both for this and for the title of best player in the world.”
Neymar’s frustration was worsened late in the game as he dribbled with the ball on the wing, only for Serge Gnabry to kick out at the PSG star off the ball.
Gnabry was given a yellow card, but former Holland player Ruud Gullit insisted that could have been the moment the final swang in Bayern’s favour.
“For me, the key moment in this game was Gnabry giving Neymar a little kick.
“That was the key moment.
“That was the moment where they went ‘hey, now we go for it!’, and I loved it when he did it because that is what you need.
“You need a little aggression and a little bit of intimidation and he showed that with that action.
“All of a sudden, something happened with that team and they scored the goal.”
Coutinho also discussed his own future after the game, and conceded that he doesn’t know where he’ll play next
