Real Madrid star Raphael Varane ‘to become Man Utd player this week’ with saga nearly over
Real Madrid star Raphael Varane will become a Manchester United player this week, it has been claimed. The France international has just one year left on his current contract over at the Bernabeu. And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes he can be the ticket to Premier League title glory next time out.
Real Madrid have already lost Sergio Ramos, who chose to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
And Varane is looking increasingly likely to join the Spain international out of the exit door, believing now is the right time to pursue a new challenge elsewhere.
Manchester United have admired the 28-year-old for over a decade, with interest dating back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge.
Solskjaer is now sensing an opportunity, believing the centre-back has the potential to help his side win the Premier League title next term.
And the Manchester Evening News have cited a report suggesting Varane will complete his move to the club this week.
Should that happen, the Norwegian would have every right to feel delighted.
Varane has won the lot during his time in Spain, rising up to become one of the best players at the club.
Initially signed as a raw talent from Lens in 2011, he had to wait a few years before nailing down a starting berth.
But Varane eventually managed to oust Pepe from their starting XI and, ever since, has partnered Ramos at the back.
Having claimed 18 major trophies in Spain, the World Cup winner is also a serial champion.
And United will certainly need Varane to hit the ground running right away as they look to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2013.
Once they do manage to get a deal over the line, then attentions will turn to other areas of the squad.
United are keen on signing Kieran Trippier at right-back, believing the England international can help galvanise Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
His team-mate Saul Niguez has also emerged as a target, despite Barcelona looking like favourites in the race to sign the Spain international.
And United are looking at Eduardo Camavinga, too, while links to Cristiano Ronaldo remain ongoing.
Regarding Varane, former United star Nicky Butt recently opened up on the player – and insisted he’d be the ideal fit for his old team.
“For me, next season has to be about getting some silverware back in that trophy cabinet for Manchester United,” Butt said.
“It’s about getting the right players who will allow you to challenge for trophies.
“It’s a winning club, so we can’t go this long without silverware.
“The biggest thing that needs addressing for me at Manchester United this summer is that centre-back position; we need a partner for Harry Maguire.
“It has to be someone that’s going to be compatible with Maguire.
“If you spend the kind of money you did on Harry Maguire, you then have to follow it up by bringing someone in who can play with him.
“He’s the club captain; Victor Lindelof is too similar to him.
“It needs to be someone with pure, blistering pace, someone who can play out from the back.
“Everyone talks about Raphael Varane. I understand he’s a little bit older than most people would perhaps like, but you just have to go back to the days of Teddy Sheringham.
“I think we bought him when he was 32, and we went and won the treble with him. If Varane is available, then I’d go all out for him.”
