Rio Ferdinand makes big Romelu Lukaku claim as he delivers verdict on £98m Chelsea transfer
Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand thinks Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku will be a huge hit for Chelsea amid the 28-year-old’s impending £98million transfer.
The Blues have been desperate to add a clinical striker to their ranks all summer and they have seemingly finally found their man, with Lukaku set to complete his move to Stamford Bridge in the near future.
The former Manchester United frontman has been a resounding hit for the Nerazzurri, scoring a whopping 64 times in just 95 games for the Italian giants as his goals helped them clinch their first Serie A title since 2011 last season.
Lukaku was previously a Chelsea player between 2011 and 2014, however, he made just 15 appearances for the first team before completing a permanent transfer to Everton following loan spells with West Brom and the Toffees in 2012/13 and 2013/14 respectively.
And Ferdinand has claimed that the Belgian international will be a huge success during his second stint at the west London club as his knack for consistently netting goals makes him a sure thing for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
“I’ve spoken to him recently and he’s hungry man. He hasn’t confirmed to me that he’s signing for Chelsea but he just said this season, he’s hungry”, Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel.
“I just think this guy, a lot of greatness comes through having fuel and what I mean by that is having doubters and wanting to prove them wrong.
“He’s got a whole stadium full at Manchester United who doubted him, all the fanbase at Old Trafford doubted him. A lot of people weren’t too dissatisfied when he left.
“He will be sitting there and looking in the diary to see when that Old Trafford game is and he will want to unload.
“Romelu Lukaku guarantees you 20 goals, minimum. He guarantees you that. He’s scored goals wherever he’s been, he’s an elite goalscorer, it’s as simple as that.”
The former West Ham and Manchester United centre-half has also claimed that Lukaku’s clinical edge will make him the perfect partner for German international Timo Werner, who could play off the left-wing next term.
“If he gets the chances that Timo Werner got last year, he bangs 30-35 goals, it’s as simple as that. I think Werner will still be vital for them with how he runs off the ball and creates space.
“Chelsea have heavy artillery up front now, a real mix of talent, all different type of players, a real good blend. Lukaku going there makes them an absolute threat to win the title. They could win it.”
