Sir Alex Ferguson explains what he expects from Cristiano Ronaldo’s second Man Utd spell
Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has broken his silence after Cristiano Ronaldo’s sensational return to the club. The former Man United manager has revealed he spoke to the Glazers to ensure if Ronaldo was returning to the Premier League, Old Trafford would be his destination.
On Saturday, Ronaldo made his second debut, scoring a brace as the Red Devils thumped Newcastle United 4-1.
The 36-year-old sent the Old Trafford crowd into a frenzy as he tapped Man United into the lead on the brink of half-time.
He then cropped up with another goal to fire the hosts back ahead in front of the Stretford End, running onto Luke Shaw’s through ball before slotting home.
His excellent relationship with Sir Alex is well-documented, and the former boss was unsurprisingly present at the Theatre of Dreams to witness ‘his boy’s’ homecoming.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash, Sir Alex expressed his excitement over Ronaldo’s second debut.
The iconic Scotsman explained his role in bringing Ronaldo back to the club and outlined what he expects from his second stint.
He told Viaplay: “I’m excited like everyone else.
“There was anticipation all day yesterday and waking up in the morning. I speak for all supporters; it’s a great day for Man Utd.
“A lot of people played their part [in bringing Ronaldo back], and I contributed knowing that Cristiano really wanted to come here, and that was important.
“It worked very well. I wouldn’t say it’s emotional, but it’s exciting for me and relief because I couldn’t imagine him playing for Man City. I don’t think anyone could.
“That’s why we took steps to make sure he came here, and the club then followed in very well, and I spoke to the Glazers, and it was done.
“I think he will make an impact on the young players in particular, he’s got the experience to handle the occasion.”
Before United registered their firm interest, Ronaldo was in talks over a controversial move to Manchester City.
But Sir Alex, Bruno Fernandes, Rio Ferdinand and other Red Devils icons contacted the Portugal international to change the tide.
Ronaldo will look to help United make a solid start to the new Champions League campaign at BSC Young Boys on Tuesday.
