Southampton goalkeeper will depart this summer with competition for number one shirt fierce
Southampton will look to move on either Fraser Forster or Angus Gunn this summer after Ralph Hasenhuttl made clear to his four-strong team of first-choice goalkeepers that Alex McCarthy will be his number one pick for 2020/21.
Hasenhuttl is spoilt for choice between the posts at St. Mary’s on the dawn of the new season with McCarthy, Forster, Gunn and youngster Harry Lewis all currently training with his first-team group.
McCarthy start against Crystal Palace on the season’s opening day, Hasenhuttl has confirmed, but as for who will make the bench at Selhurst Park could prove telling as to which goalkeeper the club will look to move on.
Forster is still understood to be a wanted man at Celtic Park this summer while Angus Gunn has been linked with a move to Championship side Stoke City.
But it could yet come down to which goalkeeper attracts the most interest before the decision is made as to who will act as McCarthy’ back-up this season.
“Alex will be our number one,” Hasenhuttl told HampshireLive. “He deserves to have that trust put in him because he was spectacular last season.
“He developed every part of his game and, in the end, we will have to have a look at what happens with the other goalkeepers.
“We don’t need both [Fraser and Angus], so it is very likely that one of them will be leaving us.
“It’s good because we have two goalkeepers at the moment who are trying to push Alex, but he is a little bit ahead of the other guys.”
He added: “We will have a look.”
Southampton have themselves been linked with their own transfer pursuits in recent days with names such as Emmanuel Dennis and Hamza Choudhury all linked with moves, but Hasenhuttl has refused to comment on any speculation.
He said: “More needs to be done in the transfer market, absolutely. We know that we have lost a number six in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, so we will definitely do something there.
“There is still time to go. I think we have a good eleven but we have a lot of games this season so we will need some alternatives.
“But I don’t want to discuss any of those rumours,” he said.
