Thiago Alcantara warned he will face problem as soon as he completes Liverpool transfer
Thiago Alcantara is set to finally complete a move to Liverpool – but the midfielder has been warned he may not be the first name on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet. Liverpool have agreed to pay an initial £20million for Thiago, which could rise by a further £5m in add-ons. The Spaniard is set to become only Klopp’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas.
Liverpool were initially not prepared to pay Bayern Munich’s asking price of £27m for a 29-year-old who has entered the final year of his contract at the Allianz Arena.
But it now appears a deal is set to be concluded in the coming days after an agreement was reached.
Reports say Liverpool do not need to sell the Barcelona-linked Georginio Wijnaldum if they sign Thiago.
And former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor says Thiago will have to battle it out for a place under Klopp, especially if Wijnaldum stays.
“I don’t see that, I see it as why would Liverpool want to sell Wijnaldum when they can add to their squad?” Agbonlahor told Sky Sports News.
“Every other team is strengthening, building a bigger squad, he’s going to add to Liverpool, he’s not going to take anyone’s place.
“There might be some games where Wijnaldum will play, some games where Thiago will play, I think Jurgen Klopp will start to mix up his team.
“So I still see Wijnaldum staying at Liverpool and Thiago not playing every game.”
Wijnaldum’s link to Barcelona is largely down to the appointment of his former Holland boss Ronald Koeman at the Nou Camp.
And Agbonlahor says Wijnaldum should push for a move to Barca if a deal is there to be done.
He added: “If you’re Wijnaldum, he played every game under Ronald Koeman for Holland, so he’s got the chance to go and play for a manager that he knows, he likes playing with.
“How many times will you get a chance to go and play for Barcelona?
“They might not be the team they’ve been over recent years but it’s still Barcelona, you’re getting the chance to go and play with [Lionel] Messi, with superstars at Barcelona.
“He’s coming to 28, 29, so it may be his last chance for that big move.
“So if I was Wijnaldum and I got offered that chance to go to Barcelona, I would definitely be pushing that move through.”
