Wolves join the race for €40m Liverpool and Arsenal transfer target
Wolverhampton Wanderers are the latest team to be linked with a move for in-demand Mainz star Jean-Phillipe Gbamin, according to reports.
The 23-year-old has this week returned to training with the Bundesliga side after his international exploits with the Ivory Coast.
But reports in Germany have claimed that it is ‘only a matter of time’ before Gbamin’s circumstances will change.
Bild have reported that Wolves , along with Monaco have joined the race for the versatile centre-back, who is equally adept at playing in the centre of midfield.
Gbamin has been consistently linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with his agent Bernard Collignon revealing they have held talks with a number of the top flight’s ‘big six’.
AC Milan make Patrick Cutrone decision
“I had meetings with Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and many other clubs. He is in the shortlist. However, not as a top candidate, because its exact position is unclear,” he said earlier this summer.
The report has claimed that Mainz will chase a fee between €30m and €40m for the defender. He signed for Mainz in 2016 and has three years left on the contract he signed upon his switch from Lens.
Wolves have yet to bring in any new additions thus far in the window, with the exception of turning two loan deals permanent.
It is believed that Wolves are chasing over ‘quality over quantity’ with their first European campaign in 39 years set to begin this week.
Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has also highlighted the need for versatility in any potential new signings, meaning Gbamin could fit the bill perfectly.
