Mikel Arteta praises Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Thomas Partey for his performance against Newcastle United, as quoted on BBC Sport.
Partey started for Arsenal in their Premier League game against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium in North London on Monday evening.
The Ghana international defensive midfielder, who has had injury issues this season and has only just recovered from a thigh problem, was taken off midway through the second half.
After the match, which Arsenal won 3-0, Arteta praised Partey, and added that he will have to protect the 27-year-old former Atletico Madrid star.
BBC Sport quotes Arteta as saying about Partey: “I am really happy. He got better and better as the game went on. He has a big influence and gave us things which were different from any other player. We have to protect him as he’s not played that much.”
Partey showed against Newcastle what he is capable of, as he provided the assist for the first goal with a wonderful long ball, imposed himself in the middle of the park and drove the team forward.
It made sense for Arteta to take off Partey midway through the second half, as the Gunners had pretty much won the game by then.
The defensive midfielder will be a big player for Arsenal this season and beyond, and there is no need for Arteta to take risks with him, especially as he has only just recovered from his injury.
According to WhoScored, Partey has made five starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League and has played once in the Europa League for Arsenal so far this season.
