Some iPhones face total WhatsApp block – is your Apple device on the list?
Some Apple iPhone owners could be in for a shock in the coming months with WhatsApp rumoured to be planning some major changes to its service.
The hugely popular app, which is used by over two billion people, is thought to be in the process of testing an update that may see some older Apple smartphones losing full access to text messaging, voice calls and video chats.
The update was spotted by the ever-reliable team at @WABetainfo who have a habit of getting all future updates from WhatsApp spot on.
In a post on Twitter WABetainfo warned: “WhatsApp Messenger beta 2.21.50 drops the support for iOS 9.” If true, it will mean any iPhone not capable of running newer versions of Apple’s operating will lose access to the app.
Now, this clearly won’t be a problem for anyone who has recently upgraded their iPhone as most are fully compatible with the latest Apple software.
However, for those that happen to have an iPhone 4s or older in their pocket then they may find that they’ll need to take a trip to the Apple store for an upgrade as it’s only iPhone 5 and older that are compatible with later versions of iOS.
There’s no official word from WhatsApp if this rumour is true but it wouldn’t be the first time the Facebook-owned firm has blocked older devices from using its app,
When WhatsApp dropped support for a swathe of phones back in 2019, the company said: “While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.
“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone to continue using WhatsApp.”
Daily Star Online has contacted WhatsApp about this latest news with the company simply saying that that it does not comment on rumours.
Although this news has been posted on social media, WhatsApp’s status page still shows that its app is fully compatible with iOS 9 so it’s currently unclear exactly if or when this change will come into force.
One thing we do know is that all WhatsApp users face being blocked from the app unless they sign up to new terms and condition. The Facebook-owned company is changing some of its T&Cs and not accepting them will mean you won’t be able to use the app. This controversial update was initially planned to come into force back in January but after an outcry from users, WhatsApp pushed the changes back until May.
